Operator identity · QUICK REFERENCE
Recording rebrands without losing context
A rebrand changes how a service presents itself; it does not explain every change in the underlying business. Preserve old names as dated aliases and connect them only with evidence. Readers should be able to follow the history without assuming that a new logo means a new company or a resolved issue.
A practical checklist
- Save the announcement and its publisher.
- Record both names with the relevant dates.
- Keep any entity change as a separate event.
Putting it in context
A timeline might say that a website announced a new name in June while its contractual entity was unchanged in the captured terms. That is more precise than saying the company was replaced.
Keep in mind
Do not infer ownership changes from design changes alone.
