When a register search returns no result
A negative search can reflect the search terms, the register's coverage or the absence of an entry. Keep a record of the terms used and the part of the register searched. Report the outcome precisely rather than converting an incomplete search into a universal claim.
A practical checklist
- Try exact identifiers when available.
- Check spelling and trading-name fields.
- Record the register's stated coverage.
Putting it in context
A note can say no matching entry was found using the supplied licence number on the specified date. It should not imply that every relevant authority has been checked.
Keep in mind
Absence from one search is not a complete legal assessment.
